New Vision Concepts
New Vision Concepts is proud to present EZReader, a combination of computer
hardware and custom software that is designed specifically for users with vision impairments.
The EZReader software suite includes over 50 applications, including a book reader, file editor, email client, calender, internet browser, spreadsheet, games and more! These applications are all custom written to meet the needs of visually impaired users.
This page gives you an overview of EZReader, including available software, computer configurations and camera information.
The Online EZReader Manual provides complete information about the EZReader suite of software.
|-------- OverView -------||--- Key Applications ---|
Six of the more popular EZReader applications are discussed on this page. All applications are covered in the Online EZReader Manual.
The latest versoin of EZReader now provides users with over 50 different applications, including 10 applications for use outside EZReader to make it easier for the user to use their computer. Additionally, a new camera (different than the one in the video) is delivered with EZReader, replacing the earlier camera which is no longer available from the manufacturer.
|The EZReader software can be purchased separately and runs on Windows 10. A minimum of an Intel i3 processor is recommended. Required disk space is quite minimal, just 400MB.|
|If you don't want to install EZReader on your own PC, then one of our three PC configurations is bound to fit your needs. Each offers a different screen size, mounting method and navigation options. All work great with EZReader software!|
The 24" table top model - an all-in-one, touch screen PC - is our most popular model.
The result is that users with vision impairments can more easily access information and have access to capabilities that allow them to keep in touch with friends, family or coworkers.
As my 95-year-old mother-in-law's macular degeneration progressed, she was no longer able to read even the largest text in her Kindle app. After her doctors advised her that her condition could not be improved further with medical treatments, I came up with the idea of the EZReader.
With the large viewing size of EZReader, its large fonts and images, and its extremely easy-to-use touch navigation she was able to read books again. The same solution is now available, with expanded capabilities, to others with visual impairments.
Inventor of the EZReader System
EZReader's large viewing screen and easy-to-use touch-screen design makes reading not only possible but exceptionally easy for many people with visual impairments. With EZReader, you can once again enjoy the pleasure of reading. EZReader can even read books to you.
The book reader allows the user to adjust colors, fonts, text size, character spacing and more to best fit their vision constraints.
EZReader can import Kindle books for reading. A free library of 100 popular, classic books from the Gutenberg Project is installed with EZReader.
Additionally the Book Reader can be used to view free, daily newspapers available from the NFB Newsline website.
EZReader allows users to create and edit text files of their own!
A small library of useful files is provided, including recipes for two of the best desserts ever!
Users may create folders to help organize their files. Files may be renamed and moved between folders, exported as Word (DOCX) files with inline images and files may be attached to emails.
Coupled with ease-of-use and a full list of standard features, the EZReader email client opens new doors to communication with friends and family for users with visual impairments.
Incoming email is converted to text and displayed using the same user-selected settings with which text is viewed throughout EZReader. Email attachments may be viewed using EZReader's internal viewers or using the default clients installed on the user's PC.
Users can view monthly calendars and maintain appointment lists using the EZReader calendar.
When EZReader is opened, users are alerted if they have appointments that day.
With the included document cameera, EZReader users can view newspapers, printed books and other printed materials - magnified for easier viewing.
The primary camera, included with EZReader, provides an amazingly clear image of printed materials. Camera properties include:
By default, EZReader is set to display the provided document camera. However, EZReader can display any camera attached to the PC, such as webcams.
A smaller, more portable USB camera is also available for folks on the go.
Solitaire is quite popular with just about everone, so EZReader provides a version that is particularly easy to use for folks with low vision issues. For some of my users, Solitaire is the most used application in the EZReader suite.
This version of Solitaire does not require that users drag cards. Instead, it uses a simpler method whereby the user touches a card to move, then touches the location to where the card should be moved.
Additionally, an alternatve set of card images is available - one which replaces the customary small graphics with large letters, making it much easier for users to determine which cards are displayed.
EZFreeEditor is a great way to evaluate whether the EZReader interface is right for you. It's similar to the Editor built into EZReader, but with a simpler interface:
EZFreeEditor can create and edit an unlimited number of files but all files reside in a single folder. A small number of files is provided to help you get started.
It's worth mentioning that EZFreeEditor is equally useful for reading books, so long as the book is a text file and is placed in the "files" subfolder.
Just download and run the installation file to give EZFreeReader a try!
It can be difficult for low vision users to find information to help them cope with their physical limitations. Often, medical personnel are focussed on being effective at treating patients and find it difficult to stay up with other kinds of resources that are available to their patients.
EZReader is typically a part of the post-medical solution that low vision users pursue to improve their quality of life or to help them continue in a working environment. To help low vision users understand other options available to them, New Vision Concepts is pleased to provide information on additional resources, organizations, companies and other information useful to low vision users.
Please let me know if you know of any resources that can be added to the resource list!
